The Birmingham & Black Country Drums Aloud Project for djembe & sabar
Drums Aloud is an arts organisation whose aim is to bring West African drumming (djembe, dundun & sabar) to Birmingham, the Black Country and the surrounding areas of the West Midlands, Worcestershire, Staffordshire & Warwickshire. In fact, such is the popularity of Drums Aloud, we get regular visitors from all over the UK.
Our primary focus is on the traditional African drumming from Guinea, Mali and Senegal and other countries of West Africa. We drum the traditional and authentic rhythms from these areas based on the teachings of djembe masters such as Mamady Keita, Famadou Konate & Doudou N'Diaye Rose, plus all those teachers shown on our teachers page. As well as drumming, we also aim to develop an understanding of the associated cultural traditions of West Africa, including singing & dancing. We also include other musical forms such as balafon.
If you would like to learn West African drumming (with dancing & singing often included), then we provide drumming workshops with expert, authentic & instructive tuition, whilst remaining a lot of fun. Our drumming classes are open to all levels, but the Saturday morning classes are currently fully-subscribed (see below).
If you are a school or community organisation in the Black Country & Birmingham area and are looking for teachers to deliver high-quality drumming classes (djembe, dundun, sabar, or dance) then we can provide them.
