The Birmingham & Black Country Drums Aloud Project for djembe & sabar

Drums Aloud is an arts organisation whose aim is to bring West African drumming (djembe, dundun & sabar) to Birmingham, the Black Country and the surrounding areas of the West Midlands, Worcestershire, Staffordshire & Warwickshire. In fact, such is the popularity of Drums Aloud, we get regular visitors from all over the UK.

Our primary focus is on the traditional African drumming from Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast and Senegal and other countries of West Africa. We drum the traditional and authentic rhythms from these areas based on the teachings of djembe masters such as Mamady Keita, Famadou Konate & Doudou N'Diaye Rose, plus all those teachers shown on our teachers page. As well as drumming, we also aim to develop an understanding of the associated cultural traditions of West Africa, including singing & dancing. We also include other musical forms such as balafon.

If you would like to learn West African drumming (with dancing & singing often included), then we provide drumming workshops with expert, authentic & instructive tuition, focussing on djembe rhythms from Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast and Senegal etc. plus sabar from the north of Senegal. The classes are a lot of fun, besides being quite challenging. Our drumming classes are open to all levels, but if you are an absolute beginner, please make contact with Nigel before turning up.
